The School of Nursing offers the following graduate opportunities:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult Health Nursing (40-43 credits) with an option to take additional clinical hours and an Advanced Pharmacology course to be eligible to take the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) certification examination (four additional credits).

  • Two Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Programs:
    • Teaching in Health Care Systems (12 credits)
    • Quality Improvement in Health Care (12 credits)
  • Combining the MSN with a Certificate (requires two separate applications and separate fees)

Accreditation
In 2002, Eastern Michigan University's graduate programs in nursing received 10-year, full accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Master of Science in Nursing
This program is designed for nurses to gain advanced practice skills, knowledge of health care systems and advanced research skills. Students select one role concentration from a course sequence in teaching in health care systems, quality improvement (QI) in health care or gerontology. The program includes:

  • Five courses (15 credits) in the adult health core (including three courses with practicum hours)
  • Four courses (10-12 credits) in the theory and research core
  • Four courses (12-13 credits) in the role concentration
  • One graduate elective (3-4 credits)
  • An additional two courses (4 credits) are optional for students seeking eligibility for CNS certification.

Students will work with master's prepared preceptors in health care agencies and settings related to their interests. Courses are currently held in the evening, one night a week.

Total: 40 to 43 credit hours.

Nursing Theory and Research Courses
(10 to 12 credit hours)

Elective Courses (3 to 4 credits minimum)
Courses may be selected from nursing or other disciplines offering graduate courses. Elective credits are chosen to help meet the student's career goals.

Role Concentration Options
Student must select one of the three options to complete the program. Each concentration is 12 to 13 credit hours.

1. Teaching in Health Care Systems

This 12 credit hour concentration assists the student in developing skills in curriculum development, teaching strategies and curriculum evaluation. These courses can also lead to a certificate in teaching in health care systems with a separate application.

2. Continuous Quality Improvement in Health Care

This 12 credit hour concentration assists students in developing skills in quality improvement with emphasis on outcome measurement and process improvement. This concentration is designed for nurses, performance improvement coordinators, risk management personnel, education coordinators and managers and staff in health care facilities. These courses can also lead to a graduate certificate in continuous quality improvement with a separate application.

There are nine credits of required courses:

  • NURS 605 Health Status Trends and Health Care Delivery Systems (3)
  • NURS 686 Practicum in QI in Health Care Systems (3)
  • HLAD 525 Quality Improvement in Health Care (3)

The remaining three credits can be selected from the following list of program electives:

  • MGMT 638 Building Continuous Improvement Teams (3)
  • QUAL 557 Measuring Customer Satisfaction (3)
  • QUAL 552 Quality Planning (3)

3. Gerontology

This 13 credit hour concentration is designed as a collaboration between the School of Nursing and the Interdisciplinary Gerontology program to promote advanced knowledge and care to elderly clients.

Admission Requirements for Master of Science in Nursing

To apply to the graduate nursing program:

1. Complete an application for admission to EMU at: http://www.emich.edu/admissions.

2. Satisfy Graduate School admission requirements.

3. Possess a BSN degree from an NLN-accredited nursing program OR R.N. licensure with a bachelor's degree in another discipline.

4. Have at least a 3.0 college GPA. (Applicants may seek conditional admission with a GPA of 2.75.)

5. International students must have a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 80 on the Michigan English Language Ability Battery (MELAB).

6. Submit a sample of your writing (four to five pages suggested). The sample could be a published article, term paper or a new composition and it should demonstrate your ability to appropriately use peer-reviewed literature to support ideas.

7. Have a current RN license to practice as a professional nurse in Michigan or eligibility to obtain a license in Michigan.

8. Submit three references that document professional competence in nursing practice and potential for success in a graduate program. (specific form)

9. Submit a two-to-three-page narrative statement of professional goals for graduate study and future career.

10. Have successfully completed an approved basic statistics course that includes descriptive and inferential statistics, with a grade of B or better within the last 10 years.

11. Have successfully completed a basic health assessment course.

12. Select program: NUR/MSN-HH on application form.

Requirements for Admission for Teaching Certificate

1. Satisfy Graduate School admission requirements.

2. Select graduate certificate program: HCS/CTHC-HH.

3. Minimum G.P.A. of 2.5.

Requirement for Admission for Quality Improvement Certificate

1. Satisfy Graduate School admission requirements.

2. Select graduate certificate program: CQI/CT-HH.

3. Minimum G.P.A. of 2.5.

Requirement for Admission for BOTH MSN and Certificate

1. Complete two separate applications including separate fees.

2. Meet requirements for both applications.
