Public Safety Administration

Eastern Michigan University’s bachelor’s degree in public safety administration will prepare you to become a leader in your field and to take advantage of growing opportunities for advancement within public safety professions.

The degree builds on your previous education and experience, is responsive to recent challenges and mandates about homeland security, and emphasizes coursework in leadership, public policy, politics, financial and human resource administration. Courses are designed specifically for working professionals and are offered on evenings and weekends at EMU’s convenient locations in Detroit and Livonia, as well as online and on EMU’s main campus in Ypsilanti.

Skilled public safety professionals are in demand

As a graduate of the program, you’ll be qualified for leadership positions in law enforcement, public safety, fire service, private security, corrections, disaster and emergency management, homeland security and more.

With a variety of concentrations offered, you’ll increase your knowledge in law enforcement administration, fire service operations, threats to public safety arising from environmental and natural disasters, homeland security, and administration within correctional institutions. And, you’ll develop the leadership skills to evaluate and respond to these problems through use of innovative practices and effective management of budgets and personnel. The program will also help you meet new Department of Homeland Security mandates for first responders.

Accreditation and reputation

EMU’s public safety administration program is recognized by the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Training Council and the Federal Emergency Management Association. And, EMU’s Center for Regional and National Security has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). EMU’s strong reputation within the public service community means you can count on your degree being valued by prospective employers.

An adviser will work closely with you to ensure the maximum number of credits you’ve earned through an associate’s degree and/or academy transfer to EMU so none of the time and money you’ve already invested in your education is wasted. If you’re transferring from one of the many community colleges with an articulation agreement with EMU, you can count on a seamless transition into the program.
